VAT Calculation Formulas

Extract VAT from amount:

VAT = Amount × Rate ÷ (100 + Rate)

Add VAT to amount:

VAT = Amount × Rate ÷ 100

When extracting VAT, the tax is already included in the amount and needs to be isolated. When adding VAT, the tax is calculated on top of the base amount.

About the VAT Calculator

VAT (Value Added Tax) is an indirect tax included in the price of goods and services. In Russia, the standard VAT rate is 20%, but from 2025 a 22% rate applies to certain categories. Reduced rates include 10% for essential goods (food, children's products, medicine) and preferential rates of 7% and 5% for businesses on the simplified tax system.

The calculator works in two modes. 'Extract VAT' — when you know the total amount including tax and want to find how much of it is VAT. Formula: VAT = Amount × Rate ÷ (100 + Rate). 'Add VAT' — when you know the net amount and want to find the total with VAT. Formula: VAT = Amount × Rate ÷ 100.

All calculations are performed instantly in your browser. The calculator is useful for accountants, entrepreneurs, procurement managers, and anyone working with VAT-inclusive documents.

VAT FAQ

What is VAT?

VAT (Value Added Tax) is an indirect tax included in the price of goods and services at every stage of production and sale. The final consumer pays the full VAT amount, while businesses remit the difference between 'input' and 'output' VAT to the government.

What VAT rates apply in Russia?

The standard rate is 20% (since 2019). From 2025, a 22% rate applies to certain categories. The reduced 10% rate covers food, children's and medical products, and books. Rates of 7% and 5% are preferential for businesses on the simplified tax system.

What's the difference between extracting and adding VAT?

'Extract VAT' means finding how much tax is contained in a known amount (e.g., from a receipt or invoice). 'Add VAT' means adding the tax to a net amount (e.g., to the cost of goods) to find the total price.

What formulas are used for calculation?

Extract VAT: VAT = Amount × Rate ÷ (100 + Rate). Amount without VAT = Amount − VAT. Add VAT: VAT = Amount × Rate ÷ 100. Amount with VAT = Amount + VAT. For example, at 20% rate from 120,000: VAT = 120,000 × 20 ÷ 120 = 20,000.

How accurate is the calculator?

The calculator uses standard mathematical VAT formulas accepted in accounting. Results match calculations in 1C and other accounting systems. For financial documents, we recommend rounding pennies according to accounting rules.
