What is an in-browser online translator?
Online translator through the Bergamot neural network — an open-source machine translation model used in Firefox. Supports 16 languages, translates text and PDF entirely locally in your browser. Quality is close to Google Translate, but without sending the document to a server — critical for contracts, medical records, and legal texts.
About Convertilo Translator
Convertilo uses the Bergamot neural network — an open-source machine translation model based on Marian NMT, developed by Mozilla in collaboration with European universities. The same model is embedded in Firefox for web page translation. Language models are downloaded once, cached in your browser, and work fully offline.
How translation works
- Language model loads lazily on first request (~17 MB per pair)
- Translation runs through WebAssembly right in your browser — no server calls
- For rare language pairs, we pivot through English (X → en → Y)
- All 16 languages, including direct en↔ru, are supported by a single neural network
- Your documents and text never leave your device — privacy guaranteed
Benefits of our translator
Complete privacy
Your text is not sent to any server — the neural network runs right in your browser. Safe for contracts, medical records, legal documents.
Works offline
After first model download, the language works without internet — handy on a plane, on the road, or in low-connectivity areas.
16 languages
English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Ukrainian, Polish, Czech and more — all on a single neural network.
Translator FAQ
Where does my text go when I translate?
Nowhere. Translation runs in your browser via WebAssembly. We see neither the original nor the result — this is the open-source Bergamot model, same as in Firefox.
How good is the translation quality?
Close to Google Translate for long coherent texts. On short phrases and slang it may underperform. Good with technical, legal, medical content.
Which languages are supported?
English, Russian, Ukrainian, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Czech, Portuguese, Dutch, Bulgarian, Persian, Estonian, Icelandic, Norwegian. Direct models for en↔ru, en↔uk and other pairs via English pivot.
Can I work offline?
Yes. After the first model download (~17 MB), the language works without internet. Your browser caches the model.
Can you translate PDFs?
Yes, see /pdf/translate/. We extract text from PDF and translate it. Side-by-side view shows source PDF and translation. Download as TXT or DOCX.
