About the conversion
WMV is the Windows Media format, a legacy of the era when video was recorded onto a Windows PC. Such files still turn up in old archives, presentations and surveillance recordings, but outside Windows there is almost nowhere to open them: neither phones, nor TVs, nor social networks work with them.
The codecs inside a WMV are not compatible with the MP4 container, so the video is re-encoded to H.264 and the audio to AAC. It takes time, but the result opens on any device without extra players or codec packs.
