Wallpaper Calculator

How many wallpaper rolls for a room — by wall area accounting for windows, doors, and pattern repeat. Free online wallpaper calculator.

Vertical pattern repeat in cm. Use 0 for plain wallpaper

Calculation formula

Strips = ⌈perimeter ÷ roll width⌉; strips per roll = ⌊roll length ÷ (height + repeat/100)⌋; rolls = ⌈strips ÷ strips per roll⌉

First we work out the total number of vertical strips around the perimeter, then how many full strips you can cut from one roll given the pattern repeat allowance, and divide one by the other.

About the wallpaper calculator

The wallpaper calculator estimates how many rolls you need for a room based on its length, width, and ceiling height. It subtracts the area of windows and doors from the total wall area, and adds the pattern repeat to each strip so neighbouring strips line up.

Enter the room dimensions, the combined area of windows and doors, the roll width and length printed on the label, and the pattern repeat in centimetres (use 0 for plain wallpaper). The tool returns the wall area to cover and the number of full rolls, rounded up.

Everything runs in your browser — no data is sent to a server. Handy for a quick estimate before heading to the home improvement store.

Calculator benefits

Frequently asked questions

What is wallpaper pattern repeat and why does it matter?

Pattern repeat is the vertical distance after which the design repeats — printed on the label in centimetres. The repeat is added to every strip so adjacent strips align without offset, which uses extra paper.

Do I need an extra roll on top of the calculation?

The calculator already rounds rolls up, but for a complex pattern or tricky cuts at the floor and ceiling it is worth buying one more roll just in case — from the same batch, otherwise the shade may differ.

How do I calculate L-shaped rooms or bays?

For irregular rooms, add up the lengths of all walls and divide by 2 to get an effective perimeter. Then enter length and width values whose 2 × (length + width) equals that perimeter.

What do I enter for plain wallpaper?

If the design needs no matching, or the wallpaper is plain, enter 0 for pattern repeat. Consumption goes down — you get more strips per roll.

Should I subtract windows and doors?

Yes, when their combined area exceeds 2–3 m². Large panoramic windows and double doors can save you a whole roll, but small openings are best left in as natural offcut reserve.

What roll sizes should I use?

Common sizes are 0.53 × 10 m (narrow, often paper) and 1.06 × 10 m (metric vinyl/non-woven). You will also see 0.53 × 15 m and 1.06 × 25 m — every size is printed on the label.
