Tile Calculator

Calculate tiles for floor, wall, and bathroom: tile count with reserve, grout volume, and adhesive. Supports paving tiles.

m

Length of the floor or wall in meters

m

Width of the floor or height of the wall in meters

cm

Length of one tile in centimeters

cm

Width of one tile in centimeters

mm

Thickness of the joint between tiles in millimeters

%

We recommend 10% for straight layout and 15% for diagonal

Tile calculation formula

Tiles = ⌈ (length × width) ÷ (tile_cm × tile_cm ÷ 10000) × (1 + reserve%) ⌉

Surface area in m² is divided by one tile area, then multiplied by reserve for cuts and waste. Adhesive ≈ 5 kg per m².

About the tile calculator

The tile calculator estimates how many tiles you need to buy for a floor, wall, or backsplash, factoring in surface dimensions, tile format, and a mandatory reserve for cuts and breakage.

A 10% reserve is enough for straight layouts; diagonal patterns and paving tiles need 12–15%. The calculator also estimates tile adhesive consumption — about 5 kg per square meter for an average bedding layer.

All calculations run in your browser: enter the room and tile dimensions and instantly get the piece count and adhesive demand — no signup or downloads required.

Frequently asked questions

How much reserve should I add for tile cuts?

Use 10% for straight layout and 15% for diagonal. Paving tiles and complex patterns (herringbone, checkerboard) need 12–15% on top of the surface area.

How do I calculate a diagonal tile layout?

Surface and tile areas stay the same, but increase the reserve to 15% — diagonal layouts cut corner tiles in half and produce more waste. A simple sketch on paper helps optimize the cuts.

Do I need a separate grout calculator?

Grout consumption depends on joint thickness and width plus tile format. Enter the joint width here, then use the formula on the manufacturer's bag (typically 0.3–0.5 kg per m² for a 2 mm joint) to get the total weight.

How much tile adhesive per square meter?

Average consumption is 5 kg of dry mix per m² for a 4–6 mm bedding layer. For large-format tiles or uneven substrate plan 6–8 kg per m².

Tile is in centimeters, surface is in meters — is that correct?

Yes, that's the convention: rooms are measured in meters, tile formats are listed in centimeters (30×30, 60×60). The calculator handles the conversion automatically.

How do I count tiles for a bathroom?

Count the floor and each wall separately — heights differ and tile formats may vary. Subtract door and window openings from the wall area, and always keep the 10% reserve.
