Laminate Calculator

Calculate laminate by room area accounting for layout and cuts. Box count and 5–10% reserve.

m

Room length in meters

m

Room width in meters

mm

Length of one laminate plank in millimeters (typically 1380 mm)

mm

Width of one laminate plank in millimeters (typically 193 mm)

Number of planks in one box (usually 8 pcs)

%

Waste reserve: 5% for straight layout, 7–10% for diagonal

Calculation formula

Boxes = ⌈Area × (1 + Reserve%) ÷ Box area⌉

One plank area = length × width ÷ 1,000,000 (m²). Box area = boards per pack × plank area. The number of boxes is rounded up because laminate is sold in full packs only.

About the laminate calculator

The laminate calculator helps you quickly figure out how many boxes and planks you need for a room. Enter room length and width, the size of a single plank, and the number of planks per box — the tool computes the floor area, adds a waste reserve, and rounds up to whole boxes.

Plank size and pack count vary by manufacturer: a common format is 1380×193 mm at 8 planks per box (≈2.131 m²/pack), but 1292×192 mm and 1845×244 mm are also common. Enter the numbers from your own pack — the result updates instantly.

Everything runs in your browser: no upload, no signup. Save the result and bring it to the store so you don’t buy extra boxes — or come back short.

Works with any plank and pack size — paste the numbers from your specific box.

Layout-aware reserve

The 5–15% reserve covers straight, diagonal, and complex layouts.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use a 5%, 10%, or 15% reserve?

Straight layout along the long wall — 5–7%. Diagonal or staggered — 10%. Complex rooms with columns and niches — 15%. Going below 5% is risky: a single ruined plank near the end will force you to buy a whole extra pack.

What's the difference between class 31, 32, 33, and 34?

Class 31 is for bedrooms and lightly used rooms. Class 32 is universal for residential use. Class 33 holds up in hallways, kitchens, and small offices. Class 34 is commercial-grade for high-traffic public spaces.

Which way should I lay laminate planks?

The classic rule is along the direction of natural light — plank length pointing toward the window, so seams are less visible. In narrow hallways lay planks along the long wall to lengthen the space; diagonal layout visually widens square rooms.

Do I need a separate underlay calculator?

Not really. Underlay is sold by area in rolls or mats — buy slightly more than your floor area (×1.1). Pick a roll or box whose coverage matches the room area plus 10% for seams.

How do I find the area of one box?

Plank area = length × width ÷ 1,000,000 (mm to m²). Box area = plank area × planks per pack. For 1380×193 × 8 planks that's 2.131 m²/box. The calculator uses exactly this formula.

What should I do with leftover planks?

Keep 1–2 spare planks for repairs. If a board gets damaged later, you'll have an exact match — manufacturers refresh decors every year, and finding the same shade and pattern after a season is rarely possible.
